Oh my goodness...It has been far too long since my last post. :( I am just realizing that it has been 2 1/2 years, which means I haven't even shared our newest "addition" yet. Our family has gone from 5 to 6, and it has been a joy! Kynslee Marie was born on March 28, 2019 at 3:30 P.M. She was 8 lbs. 10 oz. and honestly I don't remember how long. (oops!) Kynslee is the perfect addition to our family. Kynslee shares a birthday with Colleen, who we bought our farm from.
In the last couple of years, we have slowly made more and more progress. We now have a a front AND back yard with grass, yay!! Phil has removed more dead trees. The kids and Phil have cleaned out and fixed up the chicken coop, which we used for Samantha's graduation reception in May 2019, along with our garage. The plan was to make it a hangout for the kids. Phil finished the fireplace and mantle in time for Christmas this year. It was fun to get to hang our stockings! Some projects in store yet include: Finishing the laundry room and adding a door, making a backsplash in the kitchen, and finishing the basement. Of course there are some finishing touches that still need to be completed also. So, backing up here, there has been a lot of things occur in our lives the past 2 1/2 years. We sadly lost Phil's mom to cancer on July 31, 2018. This has definitely left a void in our lives. Samantha graduated from LN High School in May 2019 and has just completed her first semester of college. Blake is a junior at LN. Connor is an 8th grader at Sandy Creek. He hasn't made the change of schools, like his big brother and sister did. I started teaching 1st grade at LN in Lawrence this Fall. It has been a wonderful change.

The end of December, Winter arrived and with an attitude! It has been a cold last few weeks! I can't believe I haven't updated this since October...so here goes! Phil has still been working on the house. We now have quite a bit of the trim hung, but still not all of it. The fireplace is in the living room...still in its cardboard box. :) Baby steps, right?! Speaking of baby steps...Right before Thanksgiving we had our 20 week ultrasound. The three kids and Phil were there with me for the ultrasound, but only Samantha found out the gender. She surprised us that evening at a little gender reveal party with our parents and some pink-stuffed cupakes...it's a girl! We are excited to meet this sweet little addition to our family and are doing some preparation. We have a few girl names picked out, but haven't "nailed down" just one yet. Might have to take a list to the hospital and wait to see her before we choose a name. Getting back to the house progress, we now have carpet on our staircase to the upper level of the house. We were never able to remove the previous carpet's glue from the stairs, and decided to carpet rather than continue to try to strip it. With two boys up and down those stairs, I thought it might be safer and quieter also. This was no doubt the right decision, as the morning of the day we had the carpet layer scheduled to do this job, Connor scared the heck out of us when he fell down the stairs from the near top. The loud clatter got me moving faster than I've moved for the last few months, that's for sure! I found Connor at the bottom of the stairs on all four, facing the staircase. I'm guessing that means he flipped in the process, but he doesn't really remember! There has also been some heartache the last few months. The end of October my Godfather Greg Swim passed away. He suffered from Parkinson's and after a fall in July, never recovered. Greg was one of the funnest guys to be around. He had a sense of humor like no other, and even though he had suffered for several years, he never complained, but rather was always fun to be around. I remember when I was a little girl, it was a game; he'd try to chase me around for a kiss and I'd run the opposite direction as fast as I could! My grandpa Kohmetscher also had a stroke in October. His health declined following this and December 11, he passed away. Connor's wisdom helped me that morning when I was feeling very sad. He said, "Mom, this is the best thing that could've happened for Grandpa!" He was right. Grandpa's quality of life wasn't anything he would've wanted, and I'm hopeful that he and Grandma were reunited in Heaven in time to celebrate Christmas together. I know I have been fortunate to grow up with my grandparents well into my adulthood, but gosh it's still hard to let them go. On a happier note, we spent a few weeks in November/December coaching Connor's 6th grade basketball team. It's always fun for me to get to do this, but I think Connor is ready for someone else to be his coach! He's sure a competitive little guy! Blake finished up football and moved right into high school basketball. They have an extremely young team with only 1 senior, 1 junior, and the rest are underclassmen. Because of this, Blake has been getting lots of playing time! Tonight we celebrated their first win of the season! In fact, this was the first win of any sport competition this school year for this big-hearted, hard-working group of guys...made my day! Samantha finished up volleyball in November and decided not to play basketball this year. It was a difficult decision for her to make, but it seems as though she's happy with her decision now. My goal for things to be accomplished in the next couple months are: trim work and doors complete, fireplace installed, and nursery ready! Nov. 11, 2017 Blake and his buck! Nov. 12, 2017 Phil, Connor, Blake wrestling Nov. 19, 2017 Early Thanksgiving with the Jandas. Phi's mom and sisters decorated Carolyn's Christmas tree. Nov. 22, 2017 Baby Girl Janda Nov. 22, 2017 Reveal party: Linda and Lefty (my parents), Connor, Samantha, Blake, Ron and Carolyn (Phil's parents) Nov. 24, 2017 Connor by staircase. Dec. 11, 2017 Last year's Christmas--Gma & Gpa Kohmetscher Dec. 16, 2017 Grandpa Kohmetscher's Funeral December 18, 2018 Christmas Program On December 20, 2017 I had a package in my mailbox from Denny and Diane Anderson. Denny is the oldest son of our former Clay Center neighbors, Bob & Pearl. Bob and Pearl were like a bonus set of grandparents for our little family who we were very thankful for. They both passed away a few years ago within 3 1/2 weeks of each other. My first reaction to seeing the package was, "Why did they get us a Christmas present?!" After opening it I soon found a baby quilt, and thought, "Wow, that is very nice of them!" I then read the enclosed letter and learned that this was a hand-embroidered quilt made by Pearl that Denny and Diane had in their keepsakes. They decided to give this to our new baby...what a special gift. Denny and Diane are following right in the footsteps of the type of people Bob and Pearl were, that's for sure! Christmas Eve 2017 Dec. 24, 2017 Dec. 25, 2017 Brother-in-law Travis Christmas morning---our first Christmas in our new home! Christmas Pancakes 2017 September has passed by and October is nearing it's end. The weather has just this week shown more glimpses of Fall. Cooler temps and a cold wind have been present for a few days now. I would say that the past few months have been overwhelming, to say the least. The end of August I turned 40. Not a big deal really. Phil's mom hadn't felt well all summer, but it was the beginning of September when things really went "south". We found out that she has stage 4 liver cancer. All these life changes were occurring while Phil, the kids, and I were carrying quite the secret around with us. In July, Phil and I were caught off guard with the unexpected blessing of becoming pregnant with our 4th child. So, we made it to the 12 week mark the end of September and shared our news with our family and friends! Phil just keeps telling me, "Life Happens!" Progress on the house has seemed to be slow. With Blake playing football and Samantha playing volleyball, we have very few nights and/or weekends at home to work. However, here is a rundown of our progress in September and October: Phil polyurethaned the upstairs hallway. Now we are waiting on the carpet layer to come back and lay the carpet on the staircase that leads upstairs. Phil has also added more trim and base board on the main floor and upstairs. The boys both have curtains hung in their bedrooms now! We also now have grass in our front yard, thanks to Phil. He installed underground sprinklers in the front (with the help of Darrel Harrington), after leveling and moving dirt, and then Darrel planted grass. It is nice to look out and see green grass, rather than weeds! We are currently in the process of choosing a fireplace to be installed in our living room. Phil will continue to work on completing the trim and baseboards. There are some pieces of wood that still need painted. Because he is designing his own trim boards, it is much more time consuming, due to all of the cutting. Baby announcement on FB Sept. 15, 2017 Oct. 9, 2017 Connor & Maverick
School is in full force and schedules are busy. The first day of school was definitely a memorable one, as the total solar eclipse occurred around 1:00 P.M. Samantha is a junior; Blake a freshman; and Connor a 6th grader. Our kids are growing up...Blake is enjoying the freedom of driving that his school permit allows and being a part of the high school football team. Samantha is submerged in classes that she prefers, for the most part, and enjoying volleyball. Connor is loving middle school, which makes me happy! I am still teaching 5th grade and fortunate to have my teaching partner, Jenna, back in full swing after her health scare last Spring. Phil might not be in school, but he definitely helps the rest of us and feels the effects of school, as well! The house is still slowly coming together. Phil has hung some trim and base board. He also hung the original front door of the house. It is now our pantry door in the kitchen. He was able to hang the original doors on the closet under the staircase. Samantha had previously painted them to match our trim and doors. I love the character they add to the home. The carpet layer came back and laid the carpet on the staircase leading to the basement. Phil has spent time leveling our front yard, in preparation for installing underground sprinklers, followed by planting grass. He threw his back out this past Monday morning, so is trying to recuperate from that. This means progress around here is at a stand still. This past weekend (Labor Day weekend) I enjoyed getting to pull out my Fall decor and finding places in our "new" home for them. Definitely makes it feel more like home. Our immediate goals: Get front lawn sprinklers installed and grass seed planted; Finish trim and doors; and polyurethane the upstairs hallway so the carpet layer can lay carpet on the open staircase. Since my last post, Summer has been in full swing. May 28 I lost my first grandparent; Grandma Kohmetscher. Yes, I am very fortunate to be 39 years old before this happened, but it is still not easy. I was honored to play the organ for her funeral mass, and receive one of her African violet plants. She was known for her pretty flowers that sat in her bay window, especially African violets. I am thankful for growing up with the presence of all of my grandparents, and especially thankful that I decided to visit Grandma and Grandpa K. at the Blue Hill nursing home just 3 days before Grandma passed away. Last week I went for a walk around Lawrence with my mom and Samantha on Wednesday evening. It was sad to go past Grandma and Grandpa's empty home, and know they aren't there, and not see Grandma's "Impatience" flowers in her brick planter on the front of their home. She knew how to grow them! The next morning I went for a morning run around town, and again felt sadness when I ran past their home. I saw Grandma's sister (who lives next door and looks just like her) working in her garden. My second time around town, I was deep in thought on other things. As I ran past their house, I suddenly felt a "touch" on my right arm. It was crazy...but sure gotta think it was Grandma trying to make her presence known. There was nothing else around that could've caused this feeling. We spent the month of June and half of July getting our boys to and from practices in Fairfield, and cheering them on at their ballgames. Samantha chose not to participate in softball for the first summer since she's been old enough to play. Each week we have made progress around our home; some weeks more than others, depending on the ball schedule. I have spent time organizing what I can. As Phil has put his "handy-man" skills to work and built closet shelves, it has made my organizing fall into place more easily. In my last post, I wrote that the outside needed shaped up, but that we were going to focus on the inside first. Well, that lasted about 2 weeks! :) Phil and I would both rather be working outside on the landscaping. My flowers were planted in a group too close together, so I felt the need to get them transplanted to their new spots. Memorial Day weekend Blake helped me fill in dirt in low areas around the front of the house, and then I started transplanting my flowers! We obviously need to do some type of edging yet, but that is going to have to wait for next year, I'd say. Some highlights from the last month and a half involving our accomplishments on the house are: 1) Phil stained and I polyurethaned the open staircase. He used a special dye-stain that wasn't especially easy to work with. I used a rub-on extra thick polyurethane, which was really easy to work with. 2) Phil made shelves for all 4 of our bedroom closets, our master bathroom, and a storage room in the basement. 3) Phil has hung several of our interior doors...remember, we moved in with only 1 door hung! 4) I refinished the original front door of the house with chalk paint. This will be on a barn door slider for the pantry in the kitchen. 5) Phil has all of the bamboo flooring laid in the house, except for in a couple closets. 6) Our carpet layer laid our living room carpet. Sure is nice to ditch the piece of canvas we had for a rug, and replace it with this! 7) I have started to "tackle" the boxes in the basement that were making us look like hoarders! 8) Phil finished Samantha's bathroom, except for the ceiling and floorboard. 9) Phil has worked on organizing our garage. Some things have found their way to the dump, while others have been sold. Would be really nice to actually get to park our vehicles in there! 10) Phil has moved a portion of our big dirt pile in the back yard by the chicken coop. 11) We have picked up big sticks and been able to do some major mowing. 12) We kept our promise to the kids, and welcomed a puppy into our family at the farm...Maverick. Moving forward, here is a partial list of goals...goal setting is good, right?! 1) Get both sets of stairs carpeted. (That may happen this week, but haven't heard back from carpet layer for sure.) 2) Buy trim (going to Menards tonight...11% rebate :)) 3) Paint trim 4) Phil is going to put his carpentry skills to work on the trim to create the look we want around the windows and doors. 5) Install shelving units in closet underneath the open staircase and hang the original doors back on there. (Samantha has these painted and ready to be hung!) 6) Finish mudding and sanding two closets in the basement. 7) Install flooring on the landing and to Samantha's bedroom. 8) Polyurethane the upstairs wood floors in the hallway. I have been procrastinating doing this, because it means the boys have to move downstairs temporarily. I think I'll stop there for now. The list could be much longer, but it starts to get overwhelming! School will be starting in just a few short weeks. I was pleasantly surprised today to learn that we (teachers) are not allowed to work in our rooms until Thursday of this week, due to janitorial work going on out there. Thank you, God, for the extra days at home, guilt-free! I plan to be at the pool this afternoon! Grandma's funeral June 1, 2017

May 21, 2017 we were able to move into our mostly finished home! This was made possible with the help of the following people that day: Russ & Amanda Kohmetscher, Roger & Neely Kohmetscher, Luke Norquest, Dustin, Janelle, Zac, & Keaton Corman, Ron & Carolyn Janda, Wayne & Linda Kohmetscher, and Grandma Himmelberg. We are extremely thankful for their help! That afternoon I received one of the worst phone calls in my life, which resulted in Phil and I leaving with our moving crew finishing for us. My best friend, Jenna, had collapsed at her daughter's 1st birthday party and been life flighted to Lincoln. She was the one who listened to me throughout this whole process of remodeling the house, and was probably just as excited as me for us to get moved because that's the type of person she is. Always worried about others, and happy for their accomplishments. Jenna had offered to come the following Tuesday to help me unpack. Jenna's survival of this nasty virus that attacked her heart is a true MIRACLE! She told me last night she's ready to be home and then she's coming to visit. I can't wait for that day! As for the house...it is not finished, but maintaining two homes 30 miles apart was a lot of work. We felt like we could get more done on our home, if we were actually living there. At this point, the house is very functional. Here is what remains to be done: Finish bamboo flooring in the hallway to our bedroom and in the two front rooms. Stain the open staircase. Stain/clear coat the upstairs hallway wood floor. Have carpet put down on 2 staircases and the living room. (We currently have a canvas drop cloth for an eye-catching "rug"!!) Finish painting the windows upstairs and in Samantha's bedroom. Lay floor in Samantha's bathroom. All trim work needs painted and hung. We don't even have this yet. Hang interior doors. I was able to transplant a few more plants from our Clay Center home. It has been fun to see my plants thriving at our new home. Eventually, they will need transplanted again to where I actually want them in our yard. Once we get things closer to done on the inside of the house, we will be working hard to shape up the yard. Phil and I both enjoy these kinds of outdoor projects, but we have to prioritize right now. Easter photo at the farm. Easter egg dyeing at our rental home in CC. It's been MONTHS since we've had a working toilet in our home. Well, today is kind of a big deal, because Phil installed one of our toilets!! Yep, doesn't take much to get me excited, but you have no idea! It's going to be so nice to not have to use the wilderness or drive to one of our parents' homes! Haha...they are probably thinking the same thing! :) As for other progress, Phil has the upstairs hallway ready for me to wipe down the walls and then paint. Last weekend, Samantha and I painted the front doors. I wanted color for the front door, and I really like how my yellow looks! Speaking of last weekend, a storm came up while I had run to my parents' in town to pick up the kids. Phil was at his parents' changing the oil in my Ford. In town, the storm brought pea-sized hail. 5 miles away, at Phil's parents', they had golfball-sized hail...crazy weather! As for the rest of the progress...the vanities and their sinks/tops are installed in the master bath and the boys' bath. Phil finished installing the flooring in the boys' bathroom. I picked out carpet this week in Sutton and Phil contacted a local carpet layer (Todd Boman). He came over one night to measure, so now we just need to get it ordered! I talked to Brent about helping to stain the staircase. Thankfully, he agreed to take the top piece of one of the posts that isn't secured, and is going to try out some stain on the bottom side of it. I am hoping to match the kitchen cabinets that he made for us, and figure if anyone can do this, he can! Phil ordered our interior doors this week, and spent this afternoon trying to make room for them in our garage. I painted 2 coats of paint on 10 more floor boards; they need 1 more coat. Our gutters were installed on the house this week by a man from Ohiowa, NE. Phil's next goal is to finish mudding and sanding Samantha's bedroom. By the sounds of it, that could be done this week! 4/9/17 Hail. Photo on the right has partially melted hail 4/6/17 Photos Another month has gone by. Spring has arrived, and my plants I transplanted from our Clay Center home this Fall, are sprouting! I don't feel like a lot of progress has been made with our house, but there has been some. Here's a rundown of where we're at now. Connor's bedroom and the boys' bathroom are painted upstairs. Blake's bedroom has been primed and the ceiling is painted. All it needs is the color on the walls now. Today, Phil worked on sanding the hallway upstairs. He has a few final touchups, and then it will be ready to be painted. On the main floor, Phil has installed the flooring in the master bath. We have the toilets for our bathrooms, but none are installed yet. All the bathroom vanities and tops are made, but only the master bath vanity has been installed. We have our kitchen and bathroom faucets, but they are not yet installed, either. I was able to finish stripping the staircase and upstairs hallway floor. It looks really neat! Phil did some sanding on it, as well. We ran into a problem with stripping when we discovered that the stairs appear to have carpet glue on them. It just does not want to come off. Luckily, the plan from the beginning has been to carpet the stairs. Phil has worked on installing underlayment on the main floor to better tie in the old house and the addition. He has also put down some of the flooring in the kitchen/dining area. My mom nudged me to start painting my floor board, so that has started also. As May is right around the corner, I am getting anxious to move into our home, but the "to-do" list is still overwhelming! First of all, we moved out of our Clay Center home at 602 S. Martin that we had lived in for the last 12 years and 7 months. This was tiring physically and mentally. I am glad that this particular move is behind us. When we moved to 602 S. Martin, Blake had just turned 1 year old, and Samantha was 2 1/2 years old. This is the home that we brought Connor home to after he was born, and is the home that our kids will remember as a large portion of their childhood. We all have lots of fond memories of playing outside: basketball in the driveway; volleyball on the front street (we get very little traffic!), sidewalk chalk on the front driveway; bubbles; slip 'n slide/sprinkler; lemonade stands in the driveway; play set in the back yard with the huge sandbox, all constructed by Phil (we spent hours in this part of the yard!); lakes & dams made in the sandbox; family kickball games in the back yard (Luke & Hannah were special additions to a few of our games, and Bob & Pearl loved to sit out back and watch our craziness!); golf cart rides around the house (someone hit a tree once :)); planting flowers; planting and harvesting our garden; fireworks; sitting around our fire pit (roasting hotdogs & marshmallows), and so many more... Bike rides around town, playing at the city park, visiting the city library, and daily swimming in the summer were some of our favorite pastimes. The inside of our home was also full of memories: baking/decorating sugar cookies, dances in the kitchen, bball in the basement, dress-up and play cooking/restaurant time, foos ball tournaments, board games, Pitch, Euchre, and UNO games around the kitchen table. Our home in Clay Center also allowed us to meet some very special people. Bob and Pearl Anderson lived in the house south of us until they passed away a couple years ago. They became an extra set of grandparents and great-grandparents for our family. They were very sweet people who I loved to visit with. There were a couple of times that our kids went "missing". Once Samantha was napping inside of our home, while we were in the back yard. She woke up and didn't know where we were, so went over to Bob & Pearl's very upset. Another time we couldn't find Connor. He had walked over to Bob & Pearl's and let himself into their house on his own! He knew where their candy dish was! Bob & Pearl loved our kids, and were always very welcoming to our entire family. We will forever be thankful for our time with them. The kids will also miss L.Wayne & Cindy Johnson, who lived across the street from us for the last 10 1/2 years. They spoiled the kids rotten, especially at Christmas time. Because our farmhouse is not ready, we are living temporarily at a different home in Clay Center that is currently for sale by owner. We are very thankful that they are graciously allowing us to stay here as long as we need. We spent our first night here on Saturday, February 18, 2017. The moving process consumed a lot of our time; more than we anticipated. However, the last couple of weeks we have been able to get back to working on our home. Phil has still been mudding and sanding upstairs. Last week he was able to get Connor's bedroom and the bathroom ready for paint! Yesterday he and Samantha primed Connor's room. Phil nearly has Blake's room and the hallway complete as well. Yesterday Phil started mudding Samantha's room, rather than sanding upstairs where Samantha was painting. Last Tuesday I started working on stripping the staircase again. I hadn't touched this since trying in November. At that time, I was left feeling very defeated/frustrated. However, this past week I have figured out a way that is making it go much more quickly. I am no longer using steel wool, and have found that a clean rag is much more effective! Saturday I ran out of my Zisser brand paint stripper (my favorite), so had to use a different kind. It took me a while to figure out the "trick" to making it work best, but I've got it figured out now. As I write this, I have 19 spindles left, plus 9 that need touched up from my first attempt back in November. The stair case goes up the stairs, then winds around the upstairs hallway. I am getting closer, and seeing the bare wood makes it worth it! As soon as Phil gets the upstairs completely ready to be painted, and I get the staircase done, he will be able to focus on the flooring on the main floor. It will certainly be nice to get a toilet in the house! We are so thankful for the following people who assisted us with moving: my brother Russ Kohmetscher, Luke Norquest, Mike Lorenz, and our parents Ron & Carolyn Janda and Wayne & Linda Kohmetscher. We also thank Kelly Ficken for the use of his enclosed trailer. Feb. 28, 2017 Stripping the bottom pole March 2, 2017 March 3, 2017 March 4, 2017...made it to the top of the staircase! The last month hasn't felt very productive. Our schedules have been packed full of work, ballgames, work, & ballgames! My mom & I got the laundry room painted, and the closet underneath the open staircase. I have not been back to work at the house for a couple of weeks. Phil is getting very close to having the upstair's walls finished. Probably a couple more weeks of him working in the evenings on that, and they will be ready for paint. Last weekend we had an early 16th birthday celebration for Samantha. It was fun to get away for the weekend in Kearney. I have been packing boxes this month and Phil takes them to the farm. Seems like I haven't made much of a dent on the packing, but we're getting there. Yesterday my parents helped us pack and move a bunch of things. Both garages are mostly empty now, and we have full dumpsters! I have reached the point of "just throw it away!" I have discovered things while packing that I didn't even recall having, and probably haven't looked at in the 12 1/2 years we've lived here! Our kitchen cupboards are installed. I really like them! The countertops/sinks are not yet installed. The bathroom vanities are delivered, but waiting on flooring before they can be installed. Our current plan: 1. Finish the upstair's walls 2. I will try to continue stripping the staircase 3. Phil will install bamboo flooring on the main floor. 4. Pick out and order carpet 5. Have carpet laid. Our Clay Center home is actually sold to new owners. We have been extremely fortunate that the new owners have been in no hurry to get in. We are hoping to get completely moved out this week, if possible. Because our new home is not ready for us, we will be moving into a house in Clay Center that is currently vacant, but for sale. It is likely that we will live there for the next 2-3 months. January 9, 2017 photos January 22, 2017 Cupboards being installed by Brent Rempel |
